Tamar Berman, mezzo-soprano

Tamar Berman is a mezzo-soprano vocalist performing in solo, ensemble and choral settings, and a researcher working in Music Information Retrieval.

Tamar acquired her vocal training with three of Israel's leading voice coaches: Batsheva Zeisler, Agnes Messini and Hadassah Ben-Haim, concluding with Orna Arania at Northwestern University. She holds a Ph.D. in music from Northwestern. Born in Ontario, Canada and raised in Israel, she is equally fluent in English and Hebrew, languages in which she regularly performs. Tamar now lives in Evanston, Illinois.

As a soloist, Tamar performed with concert pianist Bart Berman at such venues as Northwestern University's Lutkin Hall (broadcast on Chicago cable TV), and the Bet Lessin Theater in Tel Aviv. She was a member and a soloist of the Tel Aviv Philharmonic Choir and the Hemiola Women's Choir. With these and the Haifa Gittit choir, she toured Israel, Germany, Austria and Hungary.

Comfortable in several musical styles, Tamar has performed classical, popular, jazz, hebrew folk, liturgical and early music. Her interest in musical style is expressed in her academic research (see research page and CV).
